Unity - The Antidote to Chaos (Part 3)

In the finale of his series on Ephesians 4, Matt covers verses 7-16 on the unity of the church: Unity, the Antidote to Chaos.

[00:01:28] Like a team aspiring to a championship, the church strives together for the trophy of unity.

[00:02:24] Matt focuses today on the use of the Spiritual gifts within the church, comparing the different and varying gifts to the varying skillsets of a sports team. Each Christian ought to bring and utilize his/her unique gift toward the end of the unity of the Church.

[00:05:24] The gifts listed here: Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers.

[00:07:36] Matt cites Romans 12, listing further gifts to be used by the members of the Church for building it up.

[00:09:00] In Romans 12, Matt calls this list of gifts the “innate gifts” – those that you are born with and naturally talented in.

[00:10:29] In 1 Corinthians 12, Matt points out another listing of gifts that he calls the “manifestation gifts” – these gifts are manifest in the Christian by the Holy Spirit.

[00:12:15] Matt says now that the list in Ephesians 4 is now our third list of giftings.

[00:16:30] Matt cites a variety of Scriptures discussing Christ’s descent into Hell and His ascension into Heaven, by way of which He has brought gifts to the Church.

[00:17:21] “We are built upon the cornerstone of apostles and prophets.”

[00:19:11] Matt denotes a difference between gifts and offices, saying that while every Christian is called to utilize his/her gift(s), not every Christian is called to an office in the church.

[00:21:50] Like a building project needs proper supervision or else it becomes a mess, the church in many ways looks like a mess today because the proper supervision is not operating.

[00:26:00] Matt summarizes the points of this section – that every believer has innate gifts and is given manifest gifts that he/she is called to use under the supervision of the Ephesians offices/gifts to build up the living, breathing, temple of God for unity in the Church.
