Put On to Put Off
This week, Matt Geib continues season 2 by returning to Ephesians 4 and picking up where we left off at verse 17.
[00:01:42] Matt begins by reading through Ephesians 4:17-24, calling Ephesians a “book for our time”.
[00:03:22] “Testify” literally means to ‘do all things pertaining to the Lord.’
[00:06:10] Matt points us back to the “walk not as the world” section of Ephesians 4 previously and contrasts its description of an ungodly lifestyle with the subsequent ending to Ephesians 4 and start of Ephesians 5, describing what a godly life looks like ‘in the light’.
[00:10:20] Matt takes us back to John 8 when Jesus chastises the religious elite and their liturgical practices, making the crystal clear statement that they were in fact blind, and that if they (we) truly were in Him, they (we) would walk according to His commands.
[00:14:00] Matt parallels this point with some of the relationship conversations that we have with spouses, kids, or even pets, when we listen without receiving – tuning out and ultimately absorbing nothing.
[00:16:40] Jesus makes it clear that those who listen and don’t respond have hardened their hearts against him.
[00:19:32] Matt points out the distinction between those who may truly be naïve, and those who practice willing ignorance out of the hardness of their hearts.
[00:22:40] Matt ties the walking ways indicated in Ephesians 4:19 to the consistently evil nature of men in the beginning of Noah’s story, emphasizing the stark contrast between this kind of mentality and a walk with God.

[00:28:02] The promise of God for us today is that, walking in Christ, we can be renewed today in the newness of youth – that our spiritual nature can be refreshed and rejuvenated this very day. Even as we grow physically older, we can daily grow younger in spirit.
