Put on the New Clothes & Burn the Old Ones!

This week, Matt Geib begins the final section of Ephesians 4 by unpacking the attentive need to focus on things above and resist the desires of the flesh.

[00:03:30] Matt expresses his desire to share very practical “rubber meets road” principles for walking with God from the end of Ephesians 4.

[00:05:00] In Ephesians 4:25, Paul writes that putting on the “new man” (a new nature) is the root driver for all the following principles – as indicated by Paul’s word, “therefore…”

[00:09:20] Matt tells a story about throwing out old clothes and buying new clothes – that even with a set of new clothes, we still have a tendency to put on our old and ragged clothes since that is what we’ve always known. The same is true with our old, flesh-centric nature even when we are provided the “new clothes” of our nature in Christ to put on.

[00:13:30] Paul’s first command is to put away “lying”. Matt highlights that honesty and transparency are essential for accountability and the unity within the church that should identify us.

[00:15:40] “If our ‘selves’ are hurt, others are hurting. If it’s not taken care of, then we hurt the body of Christ.”

[00:16:30] Anger is not innately wrong, but anger is separate from its consequences.

[00:19:32] “Unresolved anger can fester into a root of bitterness.”

[00:23:25] Could the devil find anything in you to accuse you of today?

[00:24:35] Matt emphasizes that “putting off” is akin less to storing something away, and more like throwing something out and burning it up!
