I'd Rather Become Better Than Keep Looking Good
What happens when something goes wrong?
Do we face it, learn from it, and make the necessary adjustments—or do we become defensive, make excuses, and look for someone to blame?
In this episode of the Kingdom Corner Reading Room, Matt continues through Dr. Henry Cloud's Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality and explores one of the essential qualities of an integrated character: recoverability.
Recoverability doesn't mean denying failure or pretending that painful things never happened. It means having the character to face reality, recover our hope and clear thinking, take ownership of what belongs to us, and move forward.
One of the keys is learning to separate who we are from the results we produce. A failed venture does not make you a failure. A poor performance doesn't determine your identity. Secure people can look honestly at disappointing results and ask, What needs to change? rather than becoming consumed with, What does this say about me?
That leads into one of the central thoughts of this episode:
Blame is the parking brake for improvement.
When we continually blame circumstances or other people, we surrender our ability to learn and change. Mature character asks a different question: Given the reality I'm facing, what belongs to me, and what can I do differently?
Matt also explores some of the deeper reasons we may resist responsibility—including shame, the desire to preserve an idealized “good self,” and our need for praise and approval. Cloud draws an important distinction between becoming a human being who knows he or she is loved and becoming a human doing who constantly performs in order to prove worth.
The episode concludes with three questions to marinate on:
- When I fail or come up short, am I secure enough in who I am to face the truth—or do I protect myself with excuses, defensiveness, or blame?
- What result in my life right now do I need to take greater ownership of—and what part of that result actually belongs to me?
- What old pattern, habit, or version of myself am I hanging onto because changing it would be painful—and what might become possible if I were willing to let it go?
I'd rather become better than keep looking good.
Recorded on the 25th anniversary of September 11, Matt also pauses to remember those who lost their lives and the families who continue to carry that loss. It provides a poignant reminder that recovery doesn't always mean returning to what was.
Sometimes recoverability means facing what happened, honoring what was lost, and finding the strength and character to move faithfully forward from what now is.
