Walk Not as the World

Building off of his series on Unity from Ephesians 4, Matt takes this episode to draw our focus to the wider principles that the book of Ephesians is built on to offer practical, everyday advice for Christian living.

[00:02:40] The Spirit of God speaks to all our senses (i.e. “Taste and see that the Lord is good…”)

[00:03:35] Matt says that he sees “rough waters” ahead for our nation and our world, comparing our present moment to the moment riding down a river, when the white water ahead comes into view.

[00:05:40] “The message of the Scriptures is how to handle life.”

[00:07:00] “Therefore, the purpose of the church is not to make the world a better place to live in, it is to make better people to live in it.”

[00:13:11] “Testify” – Paul’s word choice means to ‘do all things pertaining to the Lord’. Matt contrasts this with idolatry, the wasting of rational power on worthless objects.

[00:16:00] People were created to know God, but in this day and age they will not realize it until they are willing to search within themselves, according to Matt. Our world has clouded our innate view of morality and the way the world out to work so much that we often no longer recognize right from wrong anymore.

[00:19:33] From Romans 1:21, Matt highlights man’s desire to dismiss God – to “not retain God in their knowledge”.

[00:21:00] Matt references the “hardness” of man’s heart, the same hardness that grieved Jesus in the Gospels. This “hardness” literally means something that is ‘no longer sensitive to touch’.

[00:23:00] Matt makes a personal note on how incredibly the world has changed over even the last 40 years – and how appropriately descriptive Romans 1 is of our world today.

[00:26:10] Matt proposes that the remaining months of 2020 ought to be a season of fasting and prayer for us in the church – to draw near to the Spirit of God, longing for a truer sense of hope, of unity, and of direction on how to navigate the rough waters ahead.
