In Touch With Reality

In Touch With Reality | Integrity — Character Dimension 2

What does it really mean to be a person who is oriented toward truth?

In this episode of The Kingdom Corner Reading Room, we continue our journey through Dr. Henry Cloud's Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality as we begin Character Dimension 2: Oriented Toward Truth.

Being truthful is about more than simply refusing to lie. Integrity requires the courage to face life as it actually is—not as we wish it were, hope it were, or try to convince ourselves it is.

Through Cloud's memorable story of a struggling dog-food company, we see how easy it can be to blame circumstances, other people, or the wrong problem while overlooking the reality directly in front of us. Sometimes the problem isn't the marketing—the dogs simply don't like the dog food!

We also explore the painful consequences of avoiding truth in our relationships. Deception may temporarily protect us from an uncomfortable conversation or consequence, but eventually it can destroy something far more valuable: trust.

As Cloud reminds us, reality may sometimes be difficult to face, but reality is ultimately our friend. We cannot change what we're unwilling to face.

Matt closes the episode with several personal reflections on self-examination, renewing the mind, receiving wisdom, and having the courage to confront uncomfortable realities head-on—even when doing so feels like a small defensive back standing between a 240-pound running back and the goal line.

Questions for Reflection

  • Where in my life might I be tempted to create a more comfortable version of reality rather than face what actually is?
  • Am I open to receiving wisdom—or only wisdom that agrees with what I already want to believe?
  • Is there a truth I'm avoiding because I'm afraid of what facing it might cost me?

The challenge: Face reality. Receive wisdom. Respond to what you've discovered. And allow that process to produce growth.

Sometimes God reveals what's behind the wall not to condemn the house—but because He wants to renovate it.
